Situation
More than 50,000 marine vessels transport cargo around the world every day, putting enormous pressure on surveyors, inspectors and classification bodies to verify those ships’ safety. To ensure uninterrupted operations, a leading global classification society with professionals around the world requires maritime inspectors to share their findings and have access to data that helps them issue fitness certificates. These functions were traditionally managed by multiple applications and systems, an inefficient process that’s difficult to scale as maritime traffic rises. The society sought a next-gen system that would provide access to inspection rules, record observations and recommendations, and store surveyors’ records for future reference.
Collaboration
Wipro Digital worked with the classification society to design and build a web-based app that offered the desired functionality while consolidating the necessary data. The resulting app provides a centralized repository of information for surveyors and their customers and is integrated with the society’s document-management systems. Accessible both online and offline, the app provides a rule- and item-based checklist so surveyors can conduct surveys smoothly. It also seamlessly issues digitally signed certificates to vessel and fleet owners, ensuring the continued flow of safe maritime traffic.
Outcomes
Using the integrated app, surveyors can efficiently report deficiencies and leverage process automation to reduce data-collection times. The app has also improved accuracy by simplifying the process of collecting and reporting, and by reducing the dependency on manual data entry by pre-populating most fields with the pertinent information.
